Water

One night I dreamt that I was drowning; a sudden uncontrolled descent into deep, cold darkness.
Arms and legs search in vain for something solid; lungs burning, desperate for the relief of air.
A single thought echoes across the abyss: Where are you?  Why have you abandoned me here?
Out of the silence truth presses in against my skin.
“My child, don’t you know?
[I am] water.”
